The Power of Music

Everything. Music is everything. In fact, I believe, music in itself is healing. We turn to music during every single period of our lives, just not because we like it, but perhaps because in fact we need it. So we want to be moved, to be induced, to belong, and to feel that we are understood. I can’t count anymore how many times music has indeed saved me from my darkest hours. It sounds so bloody cliche, I know, but it’s the truth. I’m so lucky that I’ve found the power of music from a young age.

I grew up with having difficulty pronouncing the letter of “R” otherwise known as rhotacism. It really impacted my self-esteem and how I viewed myself a lot. There were countless times I would blame my rhotacism and I cursed it at that time. But you know what’s funny, my difficulty pronouncing the letter of “R” will never come out whenever I sang. This became a natural treatment until finally, I could pronounce the letter “R” vocally. So, obviously, singing became my solace, my savior. And back when I was still a child, if I found a reading that had a lot of “R” in it, I would convey it through singing. Sure, it’d be borrowed words from the original musicians, but words carry feelings, feelings carry energy, and energy is universal. That’s why whenever I need some peace or clarity of mind and heart, I sing. And it has always been that way. Music paves a way for words, or emotions, or feelings, or even voice, to be heard. It paves a way for pain, and hurt, to find release. It paves a way for affection, the kind that is found within each and every soul, to radiate and find a way to spread. It paves a way for your soul to be found.

Borrowing a few lines from one of my current favorite song, “You Will Be Found” from Evan Hansen —

Even when the dark comes crashing through

When you need a friend to carry you

And when you’re broken on the ground

You will be found

So let the sun come streaming in

‘Cause you’ll reach up and you’ll rise again

Lift your head and look around

You will be found

And you will.

Carry On.
